½ cup unsalted butter

softened

½ cup brown sugar

¼ cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ cup sour cream or plain yogurt

¼ cup milk


Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a round cake pan with butter.
  • In a saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat and stir in ½ cup of brown sugar until combined. Pour this mixture into the prepared cake pan and spread evenly.
  • Arrange the sliced apples over the caramel mixture in the cake pan.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1½ cups all-purpose flour, 1½ teaspoons baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg.
  • In another bowl, cream together ½ cup softened unsalted butter, ½ cup brown sugar, and ¼ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add 2 large eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • Mix in the sour cream (or yogurt) and milk until just combined.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until well combined.
  • Pour the cake batter over the apples in the cake pan, smoothing it out.
